The Psychic Stereotype: 5 things I’ve realised in my time as a psychic.

“You don’t look like a psychic.”

If I had a pound for every time someone said that to me, I’d never have to work a day in my life again. These days, psychics come in all shapes and sizes, and no, we don’t all have wild head-dresses, or work out of tents, or are covered head to toe in jewellery (I do have a few rings though). We are normal people, just with spiritual abilities.

  1. Age is a massive factor

I’ve come to realise that the younger the psychic is, the more sceptical people are. The first thing customers often say to me is “you look very young” or “you sound very young”, and whilst I am likely younger than they are, my spiritual abilities are far more developed than they may expect. It is the satisfaction of providing them with an in-depth reading, and giving them the clarity and guidance they are looking for, and then have them say “Oh wow, you are actually very good.” that makes the job all the worth while.

2. Some people just want to see you fail.

The age old “What did I have for breakfast?” comes up more than you may think. I am a psychic, not a mind reader. I work with spirits, my cards and the energies I pick up. I am not endorsed by Kellogg's to know that you had Coco Pops for breakfast.

Another great point of satisfaction is being able to provide these people with guidance, as often, that’s what they want. There seems to be some stigma with psychics, that going to see them makes you weak or in my case, you are asking a 19-year-old for advice. I provide a safe space for all of my clients, and uphold high levels of professionalism, however some of these people just don’t want to accept anything you have to say.

3. Only women go to see psychics

This was a comment someone made to me once, and this is far from the truth. I do have a large clientele of men, with questions and queries that mirror their female counterparts. Men are curious too, however it seems that society often tries to portray them as these indestructible powerhouses who never cry and never want help. Men are sensitive, and men have feelings too. Some people forget that.

4. Some people are just angry and want someone to take it out on.

I have lost count the amount of times someone has called or messaged me just to let off some steam. Some times I have let them, other times it is just mentally draining. I am there to offer clarity and guidance, not for you to displace your anger onto. I am a human, I have feelings. People may view psychics as an easy target, or as it’s over the phone, there is no face to face interaction, and therefore they do not see the emotional impact what they are saying may be having on me.

Some people also come into readings expecting you to tell them certain things, and then get upset or angry when they don’t come up. I can’t paint a fairy tale, if all the cards are pointing to something else. I always keep my readings uplifting, and whilst he may not love you, someone else will. That is what matters. Progression and moving away from something that may not be good for you.

5. “You don’t look like a psychic.”

The ancient view of a psychic is someone dressed head to toe in jewellery, with a head dress, sat in a room adorned with spiritual objects and incense burning. This may be true in some instances, but for a lot of psychics, it’s not.

Take me for example, I conduct my telephone and video chat readings (COVID has prevented me from doing face-to-face readings) in my University house share. I wear normal clothes when I conduct my readings, and whilst I may have a few fancy rings (from ASOS and River Island — if anyone is interested), it is probably not the exact setting or person you expect to be conducting your psychic reading, but you only have to read my reviews to see the results I get and the help I have provided people with.
